Comparison to Jimmy Joy

Queal and Jimmy Joy are the two first companies that offer complete meals to everyone in Europe. They are both good options and nutritionally they are both complete. Each company has made their own choices regarding specific ingredients and nutritional composition. These are the differences you should consider when choosing which product to go with.

Both Jimmy Joy and Queal are based on EU nutrition guidelines (EFSA). Both products contain gluten and are 100% vegetarian. Because Jimmy Joy doesn't use a primary protein source (it's there in the soy flour, but is quite a bit lower than other brands offer), Jimmy Joy is a 100% vegan as well (Queal also has a Vegan line). Besides lactose and gluten, both also contain soy.

Because Queal believes that nutrition isn't only about the food you buy, you can also find a personalised dashboard when you place an order. Here you can find your environmental impact (which both companies greatly reduce), other statistics and recipes. Jimmy Joy has the tagline 'fun in functional foods' and tries to add some joy to the mix and their communication.

Queal Jimmy Joy Comparison

Nutrients

As you can see Queal and Jimmy Joy (formally Joylent) are somewhat similar in nutritional content. Jimmy Joy is quite a bit higher in carbohydrates. Queal, on the other hand, makes up the difference in kcal by being higher in protein, and both are similar in (good) fats. Queal follows the EU nutrition guidelines (EFSA) and Jimmy Joy is based on Dutch nutrition guidelines (NVWA). Both regular diet types contain soy and gluten. They’re 100% vegetarian.

Sugars

The main source of carbs in Queal is evenly balanced between the complex carbohydrate Maltodextrin (made from corn), the slightly slower carbohydrate Isomaltulose (made from red beets) and finely cut Scottish Oats. The Maltodextrin has a high Glycemic Index (GI, how fast carbs are processed), and the Oats a low GI. This balance ensures a quick release of energy, but also a sustained continuous release of energy for several hours, resulting in a balanced energy level. Jimmy Joy only uses Maltodextrin, which means energy is released quicker than in Queal.

Although Queal is higher in sugars than Jimmy Joy, it must be noted that the 25grams are still under the dietary reference values of the EFSA (Europe), WHO, and FDA (America, maximum of 50grams).

Fibre

Queal is higher in fibre than Jimmy Joy, giving the recommended daily allotment of dietary fibre for the average adult (40g) as set by the EFSA, highly beneficial for gut health. Jimmy Joy, on the other hand, has 32,5g, still higher than the average European diet, but borderline on the Dutch recommendation guidelines.

Fats

In terms of fat content, Queal and Jimmy Joy are very similar. Both meet the guideline for <35% energy as total fat, and both Queal and Jimmy Joy provide the recommended daily amount for all “good” fats and fatty acids such as Omega-3 and Omega-6.

Protein

The level of protein is similar between Jimmy Joy and Queal. Both Queal and Jimmy Joy provide you with sufficient protein.

Queal uses whey protein (or rice & pea protein) for their shakes which adds to the total protein content and assures a full mix of amino acids (building blocks of proteins). Jimmy Joy has decided to use no primary source of protein, but soy flour is the ingredient there that is highest in protein.

Non-nutritional considerations

Queal and Jimmy Joy are in friendly competition for selling the most amounts of meals to people all over the world. But the real competitor is malnutrition and the bad food habits that have taken over western countries.

Although everyone wants to eat a healthy meal, time constraints, knowledge or just plain laziness were barriers for people to change their habits. With Queal and Jimmy Joy you know that you can have a complete meal at any time.

Queal and Jimmy Joy are both made and sold in The Netherlands. They both ship worldwide to most countries. Jimmy Joy’s outward branding image is very blatantly casual, quirky, and colourful. Queal, on the other hand, tries to convey a more approachable professional image, showing competence and expertise.
